One of the many Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party's headquarters was active at this West Side location from approximately 1969-1972. These headquarters held press conferences, sold newspapers, and meetings in the pursuit of Black liberation and safety. In an October 1969 raid, police used shotguns to blast through the steel door to ambush Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman, Fred Hampton.
